A physical distance indicator for spiral galaxies

چکیده

In this paper we derive a Tully Fisher relation from measured I band photometry and Hα rotation curves of a large survey of southern sky spiral galaxies, obtained in Persic & Salucci (1995) by deprojecting and folding the raw Hα data of Mathewson, Ford & Buchhorn (1992). We calibrate the relation by combining several of the largest clusters in the survey, using an iterative maximum likelihood procedure to account for observational selection effects and Malmquist bias. We also incorporate a simple model for the line of sight depth of each cluster. Our results indicate a Tully Fisher relation of intrinsic dispersion ∼ 0.3 mag, corresponding to a distance error dispersion of 13%. Application of this relation to mapping the large scale velocity field is underway.

Spiral galaxy distance indicators based on near-infrared photometry

We compare two methods of distance determination to spiral galaxies using optical/near-infrared (NIR) observations, the (I–K) versus MK colour – absolute magnitude (CM) relation and the I and K-band Tully-Fisher relation (TFR). Dust-free colours and NIR absolute magnitudes greatly enhance the usefulness of the NIR CM relation as a distance indicator for moderately to highly inclined spiral gala...

Derivation of Distances with the Tully-fisher Relation : the Antlia Cluster

The Tully-Fisher relation is a correlation between the luminosity and the HI 21cm line width in spiral galaxies (LLW relation). It is used to derive galaxy distances in the interval 7 to 100 Mpc. Closer, the Cepheids, TRGB and Surface Brightness Fluctuation methods give a better accuracy. Further, the SNIa are luminous objects still available for distance measurement purposes, though with a dra...

Scalar potential model of redshift and discrete redshift

On the galactic scale the universe is inhomogeneous and redshift z is occasionally less than zero. A scalar potential model (SPM) that links the galaxy scale z to the cosmological scale z of the Hubble Law is postulated. Several differences among galaxy types suggest that spiral galaxies are Sources and that early type, lenticular, and irregular galaxies are Sinks of a scalar potential field. T...

A Technique for Determining the Extragalactic Distance Scale

We propose a method of distance determination based on the internal structure and dynamics of disk galaxies. The method relies on the universal luminosity pro le of a stellar disk represented by an exponential law. Calibrating nearby galaxies with known distances, it is found that the scale length of the disk is tightly correlated with the speci c combination of central surface brightness and r...

Effects of interaction on the properties of spiral galaxies II. Isolated galaxies: The zero point

We analyse the properties of a sample of 22 bright isolated spiral galaxies on the basis of Johnson B,V,I images and optical rotation curves. The fraction of early morphological types in our sample of isolated galaxies (or in other samples of non-interacting spiral galaxies) appears to be smaller than in samples including interacting systems. The overall morphological aspect is regular and symm...
